Deserts can be formed by nature in a variety of ways but the deserts
of the southwest were formed by warm moist air coming from the Pacific
Ocean and other large bodies in the far west. The air rises over the
mountains losing moisture as it goes. As the air reaches the top it
meets dry winds blowing from Mexico the previously moist air is now
dry and very warm. This air combined with very warm temperatures that
exist in the southwest help to create the desert conditions that exist
there.
